The Reading Slump is Real (and Happy Mother's Day!)

Hey fellow bookworms,

Lately, my energy levels have been doing a disappearing act, and unfortunately, my beloved reading habit has taken a hit. If you've ever found yourself staring at a stack of tempting books, only to feel too drained to pick one up, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's that peculiar kind of exhaustion where even the thought of immersing yourself in a new world feels like too much effort.

I've been trying to pinpoint why this might be happening. Is it the changing seasons? A particularly busy period at work? Or just the general ebb and flow of life's demands? Whatever the reason, the desire to read is still there, but the oomph to actually do it has been conspicuously absent.

It's a bit frustrating, to be honest. My reading nook looks so inviting, my TBR pile is practically overflowing with exciting new releases and old favorites I've been meaning to revisit. But when the evening rolls around, or I finally have a quiet moment, I often find myself reaching for something less demanding – a podcast, a TV show, or just some mindless scrolling.

If you're in a similar boat, know that you're not alone. It's okay to have periods where your reading energy wanes. We're not always going to be in peak reading form, and that's perfectly normal. Rather than beating myself up about it, I'm trying to approach this slump with a bit more grace.

Here are a few things I'm attempting to coax myself back into the reading groove:

  • Lowering the Stakes: Instead of feeling guilty about not diving into a challenging literary fiction, I'm picking up something lighter – a quick mystery, a funny memoir, or even a graphic novel. The goal is just to get back into the act of holding a book and turning pages.
  • Short Bursts: Even if it's just for 10 or 15 minutes, I'm trying to grab those small windows of opportunity. A chapter before bed, a few pages with my morning coffee. Every little bit counts.
  • Revisiting Comfort Reads: Sometimes, the best way to rekindle the fire is to snuggle up with a beloved book I've already read. There's no pressure to understand new plot points or characters; it's just pure, familiar enjoyment.
  • Audiobooks: When my eyes are tired, my ears are often still ready for a story. Audiobooks have been a lifesaver on walks or while doing chores, allowing me to "read" even when I don't have the physical energy.

And speaking of comfort and finding moments of peace, I wanted to take a moment to send out a very Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible mothers out there. Whether you're a birth mother, an adoptive mother, a stepmother, a grandmother, a mother figure, or simply a woman who nurtures and cares for others – today is for celebrating you.

Mothers often embody strength, resilience, and an endless capacity for giving. While a reading slump might feel like a small thing in the grand scheme of life, it's a reminder that even those who give so much need moments of rest, rejuvenation, and the simple pleasure of a good story. I hope your day is filled with love, appreciation, and perhaps even a quiet moment to yourself with a book you've been meaning to read (or reread!).

Here's to finding our reading mojo again, and to celebrating the wonderful women who make our lives brighter.
